‘Beneath the Stage’ series (2009)

Nikolaj Hübbe, creative director of The Royal Danish Ballet, saw my homicide images (Crime Ties) and thought it would be the most natural thing in the world for me to go photograph his dancers at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen...
If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that I don’t know anything; except the fact that you never know what one project is going to lead to next. Right?

‘Gravity’ (2013)

Returning for my second project with The Royal Danish ballet, I was inspired by this painting (by Danish artist Helge Refn), especially the blue hue surrounding Harleqin, making him look like he’s floating in an infinite space. The painting hung in my grandparents dining room in Christianshavn, Copenhagen. I can still smell the browned potatoes just as I can hear the faint, ringing sound going off in the kitchen when my grandmother pushed the bud on the metal rose that always remained within reach next to her dish.

From the press release prior to the Gravity solo show at d’Angleterre, Copenhagen:

GRAVITY is a photographic art exploration inspired by The Royal Danish Ballet. This limited edition series takes the viewer into a distinct dimension in which the dancer lives, breathes, transforms and constantly evolves. When peaking, the raw energy that pumps through the dancer’s mind and body collides with the surrounding physical space which then explodes into a new infinity.
That’s when gravity as we know it ceases to exist.”
